One day, a wasp taught us a Truth – the truth of our oneness with everything. Wouldn’t the world be lovely when we all awaken to this – that we are one with even the smallest of creatures.
A wasp flew into our house. Charles, my husband, is very afraid of them, having been stung badly once. But since we are currently practicing non-judgement, joy and love, Charles did not want to kill him.
After trying without success to guide the wasp out the door, we went online for advice.
The easiest way, it seems, is to add dishwasher detergent to water and put it in a jar with a hole on top. The smell attracts the wasp but the mixture disables the wings and after suffering for some time, the wasp dies. Not nice!
Or, for a quicker death, one can try swatting him like a fly. But, since wasps have armor, it takes several swats to cause enough injuries to be fatal. Not nice either.
So “Oscar” stayed in our house for two days. Two days of Charles’ fear. Oscar was quiet enough, and flew around looking for a way out. But, he stayed away from us. He was afraid too!
Then on the third morning, Charles watched Oscar land on the kitchen curtain and rest. Charles decided to speak to him. “I don’t want to hurt you. I respect you. If you let me catch you, I promise to take you outside. You won’t be hurt.” Charles went away to find a large jar.
Upon returning to the kitchen, Charles saw that Oscar was in the same spot, and hadn’t moved. He didn’t move, either, when the glass jar surrounded him. Oscar was taken outside. Then, he flew gracefully into the sunshine.
Thank you, Oscar, for showing us that we are all connected, that we share the same consciousness, that true communication can be achieved. Thank you!
There may be times when we eliminate some small creatures, for the greater good. But we can choose to do it with love. Or, better yet, one day we may be able to communicate with them, and together, find a way we can coexist without any suffering.
Yes! I’m a romantic dreamer. But guess what? We ALL are!
One wonderful day, some years ago, I was graced with the consciousness of our oneness with everything. In trying to capture this day in words, a little poem was written.
This morning I am the tree outside this window
Then I am this very window itself
I see myself in the puffy clouds today
And hear my own whisper in the wind
When I am the anger in that far argument
And I am all the walking in this summer park
The trees are me, the streets are me!
I was the rain and grass and leaves
And in each person, there are my own aspects
And so tonight, even this rebel mind suspects
That God is me!

I love that story! When we lived in Hawaii I made a deal with the giant flying roaches that I wouldn’t bother them in the yard if they left us alone in the house. We didn’t have them in the house — was it the deal we made, or was it something else?
